From the Shepparton Team

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

A Year in Review

I think we could all agree that the last couple of years has been an adjustment for everyone, and 2022 kept on swinging.

The pinnacle was the October 2022 Shepparton and surrounding floods which is apparently a 1 in a 100-year flood. Splitting Shepparton and Mooroopna for more than 5 days, many roads and businesses closed with a lack of staff who were not able to get to work, surrounded by water.

Although a lot of the town survived, there are still hundreds of businesses and homes still dealing with the aftermath of the damage, some may not re-open or be repairable. Through it all, it has been comforting to see our community pull together over such a difficult time and lend a hand whether it be filling sandbags, delivering food, offering shelter, or helping with clean-up afterward.

After another year of living with the dreaded C-Word it feels like life is returning to normal with events in full swing, towns booming with tourism, and many clients and our own team members travelling to see family and friends. If covid and lockdowns have taught us nothing else, it is the importance of making the most of our time with those that matter, and enjoying the simple things in life.

CPW Recognised at IOOF Alliances Awards

Success was celebrated for CPW at the IOOF Alliances Conference held in August this year, being nominated as a Finalist in the AFSL Excellence Award category, which recognises boutique AFSLs who demonstrate robust business planning processes and solid frameworks for governance and compliance. This is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our team as a whole. Michael was also a finalist and winner in the Advice Excellence category.

On a Personal Note

Michael and Jacky’s 2022 adventures included Emily, completing her first year of Uni and settling in well, juggling work and schooling.. Jade has been working during her gap year and is very much looking forward to starting Uni in Melbourne next year. Hunter has been off on his own adventure completing his first year of boarding school and is thriving (and officially the tallest member of the household). With all the kids on their own adventures, Michael and Jacky are enjoying their quiet household during the week as part-time empty nesters.

Ollie’s oldest son Jack (who is taller than most of us in the Shepparton office!) has just graduated from Primary School and is now preparing for his High School journey. His youngest son Dougal is busy with summer tennis which keeps weekends extremely busy.

CPW has gained another junior mascot with Kate, Brendan and Beau welcoming a beautiful little girl early in December. Beau is already in love with his “Bubby Sister” and so are we. All through this chaos Kate was able to complete and pass her Financial Adviser exam, and will be returning to CPW mid-next year as she works towards completing her Professional Year – the final stepping stone to becoming a Financial Planner.

Varj has also completed and passed his Financial Adviser Exam and will be completing his master’s degree in Melbourne during 2023, after finishing most of his Professional Year with us It has provided us with a wonderful opportunity to mentor Varj and help him achieve his ambition of becoming a fully-qualified Financial Planner. His sense of humour and Gen-Z perspective will be missed in our office when he leaves for Melbourne next year.

Kelly and Mick finally took off on their 6-week caravanning adventure up the middle of Australia and down the QLD coast. Their son Marrick, and his partner Madi were also able to join in the travels, creating many wonderful memories along the way with the highlight: “seeing our beautiful outback and national’s parks along the way.”

It is a busy year ahead for Bec, whose eldest daughter Mikayla just completing orientation for 4-Year-old Kinder next year. Mikayla is very excited. Her youngest, Ruby, managed to not break or fracture any bones this year, however, has had a few lumps and bruises along the way.. . she doesn’t have much fear at 2.5 years old.

The Year Ahead

The rate of change in our industry and business has not slowed! We are in our second year of being self-licensed. We are now focused on positive improvements and changes within the business as we grow and look to new innovations and opportunities to better serve you.

Cybersecurity is a trending hot topic with the Medibank and Optus data breaches. Our systems in this regard have always been robust with a regular cyber security audit, which includes a "penetration test” so that any vulnerable areas can be identified and updated to the latest standards.

We have also updated our file-sharing policies and will no longer be sending potentially sensitive client information as an email attachment. Instead, we will be sending a link requiring a verification code sent to your registered email address as an additional level of security.

If ever you are in doubt about an email or text, please call our office to confirm that the communication is legitimate.
