From the Albury Team

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

A Year in Review

2022 has seen a welcome return to a somewhat regular (pre-covid) lifestyle. We are pleased to see the end of border closures and heavy restrictions in that regard., However with Covid still existing and continuing to have an impact on our team, we are persistent in adhering to guidelines.

This year, mother nature well and truly let us know that she was still alive and kicking, by sending down copious amounts of rain, rain . . . and more rain! Local towns all along the border experienced riverine flooding and even some flash flooding occurring in the towns of Yackandandah, Rutherglen, and Beechworth as Craig, Demelza, and Ellen can attest to.

The destruction this has caused on our roads is immense. Going for a drive these days can be a very bumpy ride with all the potholes and even the odd sinkhole!

It’s nice to finally be experiencing some sunshine and warm weather lately and we are very much looking forward to a hot Aussie Christmas, relaxing by a pool (or a beach!) with family and friends, eating too much good food, and sleeping all afternoon.

On a Personal Note

The Albury team has had some great highlights throughout the year.

Craig recently completed his FASEA education requirements, building on his bachelor’s degree and post-graduate studies. A big achievement. On a personal note, Craig and his family managed to travel back to New Zealand to see his family, it was their first trip back to New Zealand since prior to covid. They enjoyed a fabulous two weeks in the South Island, enjoying family time and plenty of “fush” and “chups!”

Dem and her family have had many achievements in 2022, none more so with her son, Henry, finishing Year 6 and heading into Secondary school Next Year. He will be attending Rutherglen High School. She has been kept busy with many off-road trips to small country towns for her son’s football and cricket teams. Sadly, her beloved Carlton Football Club didn’t make it to the finals this year but nevertheless was very happy that Captain Patrick Cripps won the Brownlow. She is confident that her team can reach the finals in 2023. Dem is looking forward to spending some quality time with her friends and family over the Christmas break and maybe a spot of tennis watching as well. She would like to thank her loyal clients for the past 12 months and looks forward to seeing them all in 2023.

Canela joined the Albury team in February 2022. Canela has gained confidence in her role and has enjoyed getting to know most of you. Her eldest son Marco (who has Autism) completed his first year of high school, while challenging, he stuck it out and has developed friendships along the way. He also attends the local Lapidary Club and has learned how to cut and shape various gemstones. Canela’s youngest son Anton has completed year 4 and was awarded the “Most Improved” trophy at his Rugby Union presentation earlier this year, and was lucky enough to go to the new Allianz Stadium earlier in the year to take part in showcasing Rugby Touch 7’s at half time, along with other members of the Steamers Rugby Club. Canela is looking forward to growing within her role with CPW in the year ahead.

With the international borders reopening, Laura was finally able to welcome her sister and family from Belgium for a long overdue holiday, including a week exploring Albury and North East Victoria. Like Dem, it took a while for Laura to come to terms with her Swans team losing the AFL finals. And to be able to laugh with her Geelong supporting colleagues again. Laura will be leaving CPW in the New Year to explore a career in the not-for-profit sector, utilizing her skills within a charitable environment. She has enjoyed her time with CPW and will miss being part of the team.

Ellen recently completed her Bachelor of Commerce (quite the effort with 3 young children in tow), and will be attending her formal graduation in February 2023. She is looking forward to commencing her Professional Year as part of her pathway to becoming a Financial Planner with CPW next year. Ellen’s footy team won the premiership this year (GO GEELONG!) which was a big highlight. Her more recent passion is dragon boat racing with the Beechworth Dragon Boat Racing Club which she is excited to continue in the new year.

CPW Recognised at IOOF Alliances Awards

Success was celebrated for CPW at the IOOF Alliances Conference held in August this year, being nominated as a Finalist in the AFSL Excellence Award category, which recognises boutique AFSLs who demonstrate robust business planning processes and solid frameworks for governance and compliance. This is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our team as a whole. Michael (Founder and Principal of Chalmers Private Wealth) was also a finalist and winner in the Advice Excellence category.

Supporting a local artist

In January 2022, the office was enhanced aesthetically by the kind loan of some artworks from the Artist Roslyn Lockhart. If you’ve been in Craig or Dem’s offices, you will have noticed the oil on canvas paintings hanging on the back wall.

To find out more & see more of Roslyn’s work go to https://www.facebook.com/roslockhartart/

The Year Ahead

The rate of change in our industry and business has not slowed! We are in our second year of being self-licensed. We are now focused on positive improvements and changes within the business as we grow and look to new innovations and opportunities to better serve you.

We will be on the lookout for a new team member in 2023, with Laura’s departure. Until a new staff member is recruited, you may hear from Canela in regard to booking your upcoming review appointments or Ellen for any Centrelink-related queries. Laura’s personality and sense of humour will certainly be missed, and we wish her all the very best in her pursuit of a role in the not-for-profit sector.

Cybersecurity is a trending hot topic with the Medibank and Optus data breaches. Our systems in this regard have always been robust with a regular cyber security audit, which includes a "penetration test” so that any vulnerable areas can be identified and updated to the latest standards.
